Just Getting Started
Our new club has had an exciting start! We kicked off with two major events in April and May and we have several fun events lined up for the summer.
April 2018
We participated in Warren Big Brew on April 28th and tapped out of all our beer and cider.
Shayne Medore won the first place homebrewer award for his Strawbarb Fields Forever cider.
It was a cold April day, but we really enjoyed sharing all of our brews with the attendees and we are looking forward to next year.
May 2018
On May 5th, we followed with Big Brew Day at River's Edge
Brewing Company. It was a gorgeous day for brewing.
Our club demonstrated how to brew-in-a-bag (BIAB).
We took a short breather for the remainder of May. Now, we are looking ahead to some great plans over the next three months!
JUNE 2018
On June 7th, we'll be brewing on the terrace at the Market Tap.
That's right! Craft beer lovers will have the opportunity to get advice, ask questions, and learn about the hobby of homebrewing on the terrace while enjoying a pint or two of Michigan craft beer.
A few of us are meeting up to submit our BJCP competition beers from Big Brew Day at River's Edge Brewing Company on June 10th. Then, we'll return on June 20th for the Big Brew Day Finale. Come join us along with Rex Halfpenny (Michigan Beer Guide), BJCP judges, and the brewers and staff of River's Edge to wrap up 2018's Big Brew event with a homebrew competition! A panel of judges and local beer lovers will decide on and announce the winners!
In mid to late June, one of our own club members, Kelly Condron, will have her winning beer, Curious Haze, an Apricot NEIPA, on tap at Oracle Brewing Company. This beer was brewed for International Women's Collaboration Brew Day. Curious Haze was submitted in the First Quarter competition organized by Hop Craft Supply Company. The competition was for IPAs, pale ales, double IPAs, Imperial IPAs, New England IPAs, Black IPAs, Red IPAs, and any other hop forward styles. Kelly actually took first and second place for her two entries, Curious Haze and Just Peachy.
With first place she won the opportunity to brew at Oracle Brewing Company with co-owner and head brewer, Cody Smith. Check out the pics from the brew day at Oracle. We'll be sure to update everyone when it's on tap.
Finally, we'll wrap up the month with a club brew day for members on June 23, 2018. This will be our first, true club meeting. Dean Condron will also cover water chemistry, which is a topic that many of our club members are interested in learning more about. If you're not a member and would like to join this event, please visit https://www.flintareabrewers.com/join to look into our club and what we have to offer our members.
JULY 2018
We have one main event on the calendar which is a hop farm tour on July 14th at Top Hops Farm in Goodrich, Michigan. The Flint Area Brewers are looking forward to sharing this event with Kuhnhenn Guild of Brewers (KGB) and meeting other homebrewers at this event.
AUGUST 2018
In mid August, we'll join several other homebrew clubs at the Michigan Homebrew Festival held August 16-19 at Camp Agawam. Make sure to purchase your membership and reserve a campsite and come hang out with us for a day or two.
On August 23, we'll attend the Battle of the Brews hosted by Lynchpin Brewing Company at The Laundry in Fenton, MI. During Battle of the Brews – Summer ’18, local homebrews will be sampled and judged by event ticket holders and Lynchpin representatives. The winner will receive a prize pack and have the option to have their recipe brewed on Lynchpin Beer Company’s single barrel brewing system by Head Brewer, Scott Hayes. A barrel of the finished product will be featured on draft at The Laundry. Fun, energetic homebrewers who love brewing and sharing beer with their community are encouraged to apply by June 20, 2018. Ticket sales for Battle of the Brews – Summer ’18 will open online in July.
